This summer, it increasingly feels like Manchester United have cast a broad net and are searching the entire sea for a new striker, but are yet to identify which fish they want.

This has been going on and on for months now.

News – Journalist – Man Utd have now held talks with reps to sign £39million defender

Having wrapped up the attacking reinforcement of Matheus Cunha early on in the season, one would have expected the English club to have made more moves in the subsequent weeks. So far though, it has been slim pickings.

Of the many number nines that Man Utd have been linked with this summer, one of them is Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins.

Regarded as one of the best strikers in the Premier League in recent seasons, the English club were said to be interested in the £60million player.

Now, as per Give Me Sport, Ollie Watkins is willing to agree to move to Manchester United this summer. With Villa failing to secure Champions League football for the upcoming season, the 29-year-old might be thinking of moving elsewhere, even if it was Man Utd.

Should Man Utd sign Ollie Watkins?

Yes, the Red Devils do not have any European football to offer for the upcoming season, but they have a storied history and wearing the Red Devils jersey is a dream for many an Englishmen.

Watkins will also know that this might be his last chance of securing such a move.

At 29, the Villa striker is in the prime years of his career but is on the wrong side of the normal curve. He is set to start moving towards the end of his prime years and the fag end of his career and crossing the 30-barrier generally shuts a lot of opportunities.

From a Man Utd perspective, this transfer comes with its own set of positives and negatives.

One of the Red Devils’ major concerns in recent seasons is the lack of goals from inexperienced number nines like Rasmus Hojlund and signing someone like Watkins all but addresses it.

That said, considering his age, this would be a short-term fix for Man Utd and one that won’t make sense spending a lot of money on. Not every striker in the world ages like Robert Lewandowski and injuries start becoming a common occurence in the latter years.

Thus, Man Utd would ideally need to do a SWOT analysis to see if the pros outweigh the cons to merit this transfer this summer.

Should they go ahead, Watkins would be a great addition in the short term. Let’s wait and see how they handle this paradox.
