Manchester United played Leeds United in a pre-season friendly that showcased a lot of gaps in Ruben Amorim’s tactical setup, even now.
The newly promoted Premier League side more than held their own against the Red Devils despite the game ending in a 0-0 draw.
News – Approved – Player now agrees £20.8million contract to finalize Manchester United exit
Reinforcements are needed to give a competitive squad to Ruben Amorim, and one position that the club could focus on is midfield. The attack has already seen the arrival of Matheus Cunha and will soon see the addition of Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford.
However, adding an option in defensive midfield would be a good option, especially if it is a player whom Ruben Amorim has worked with before.
Reports in Portugal last week revealed that Man Utd target Morten Hjulmand would cost around £69.3m.
However, as per Caught Offside, Man Utd have been handed a huge boost in their pursuit of the Danish midfield star as his asking price has now dropped to £43.3million. This makes him an attainable target for the Red Devils.
Hjulmand joined Sporting CP from Lecce in 2023 and enjoyed rapid development under Ruben Amorim. Predominantly a defensive midfielder, the 26-year-old has played in the manager’s tactical system before and can also play further forward if required.
Sporting are generally known to be an excellent selling club, as seen with how difficult they are making it for Arsenal with their negotiations for Viktor Gyokeres. The relationship with Man Utd might also be strained after how the Red Devils poached Amorim mid-season.
However, if Sporting CP have set the asking price for Hjulmand at the aforementioned amount, it would make sense for Man Utd to push ahead and try and secure his signature.
The Dane has already made 19 appearances for his nation at the senior level, underscoring his experience.
Should Man Utd desire to sign a new defensive midfielder this summer, there aren’t better options available in the market than the Sporting CP #42.
The next few weeks should give a clearer idea of how this particular transfer saga progresses.
